OVERVIEW
Sandwiched between South Africa and Mozambique, tiny landlocked Swaziland has strangely little in common with its neighbours. Peaceful and homogenous, with one of the oldest monarchies in Africa, Swaziland has been called an "island of dictatorship in a sea of democracy." Blessed with a surprising variety of landscapes - from mountains to savannas to rainforest - and known for its friendly, easygoing population, it may come as a surprise that the country is new to modern tourism. Only after South Africa legalised gambling in the mid-90s did Swaziland begin looking beyond casinos to its ancient traditions and game reserves as the tourist draws they are today.
