The accuracy of this reference to the whole country has been contested recently, however, and in 1934, Reza Shah had the country's name changed to Iran - derived directly from the Aryan (meaning 'of noble origin') - as part of his modernisation drive.

I would say my experience was very good. We were lucky to have a compatible group of fellow travellers, the experience of living in the Mongolian countryside for almost two weeks was incredible, the itinerary was perfect, the busses and gers remarkably comfortable.

ALI SADR CAVES

These highly commercialised caves were discovered 40 years ago by a local shepherd out looking for a lost goat. They rise to a maximum internal height of 40m (131ft) and have a deep river flowing through the middle. Most Iranians are very proud of Ali Sadr.
