Sharing a short statehood together after the break up of Yugoslavia, the republics of Serbia and Montenegro finally became independent in 2006. As with most of their Balkan neighbours, tourism was at a standstill during the political upheaval of the 1990s, but the area has recovered and is back on the rise. The turmoil was nothing new: Serbia's strategic position between two continents bequeathed it a history of conquest and a culture of varied influences; Belgrade alone has been overrun no less than 30 times. Today all that booms across the Danube is its legendary nightlife, while the mountainous countryside, dotted with ski and spa resorts, still retains an Eastern Bloc flavour. Tiny Montenegro, where the Balkans meet the Adriatic Sea, is a land of Karst limestone mountains and a narrow coastal plain lined with beaches, cut in the north by the dramatic fjord at Kotor.
