Coup in Honduras

Posted: 18 Nov, 2009 | Updated: 09 Jul, 2009

Updated 18th November.
There is still a stand off between President Zelaya and acting President Micheletti, with the former still taking refuge in the Brazilian Embassy and there has been no improvement in the situation. Elections are due to take place on 29th November and there is a possibility that this could lead to rising tensions. We will continue to re-route tours that are due to travel to Honduras in the next couple of weeks. We will review itineraries again after the elections.

Updated 30th October
President Zelaya and interim President Micheletti have accepted a US-brokered deal allowing the ousted president, Manuel Zelaya, to return to power and resolve the political crisis. The agreement still needs to be signed and formalised but we are hopeful that this will mean that we will be able to return to our normal itineraries in Honduras within the next few weeks. We will continue to monitor the situation closely.

Updated 22nd September
President Zelaya has covertly returned to Honduras and is currently taking refuge in the Brazilian Embassy in Tegucigalpa. His return has led to more demonstrations in the capital and a re-introduction of curfews, the timings of which are changing on a regular basis. Demonstrations continue to occur throughout the country, and have been accompanied by sporadic incidents of violence and roadblocks. All of our groups are safe and we are not travelling to the affected areas. We are monitoring the situation very closely and will continue to change itineraries on the ground where necessary in order to maintain the safety of our passengers and staff, whilst still trying to keep close as possible to the original itinerary.

Updated 14th August
Demonstrations continue to occur in Tegucigalpa, however throughout most of the country things remain quite calm. The situation is still unpredictable and may deteriorate quickly. All of our groups remain safe. For groups that are currently in Honduras or due to travel to Honduras within the next few days we are changing itineraries as necessary to avoid travelling in any potential problem areas. We will continue to monitor the situation and continue to change itineraries on the ground in order to maintain the safety of our passengers and staff, whilst still trying to keep to the itinerary where possible.

The Ecuadorian president has called a state of emergency for Quito and Guayaquil that started on September 20th and is planned for 60 days. Tis measure is precautionary as it allows the military to reinforce the efforts of the police in the area. Things on the ground have not changed allow it is recommended that you always carry a piece of identification with you or a photocopy of your passport in the event that you are asked to show identification.

Power Outages in Ecuador

Posted: 09 Nov, 2009 | Updated: 09 Nov, 2009

Over the past few weeks there have been severe droughts in the areas which provide electricity throughout Ecuador. As a result, the government has decided to ration electricity daily for an indefinite period of time. This means that for approximately 4 hours or more each day, electricity may not be available. Please remember this also means that during these times where electricity is not available, hot water will also not be available.
Additionally, communication may also be difficult at times due to these blackouts. It is important if you are travelling in the next few months to make any friends or family aware who may be trying to contact you that at certain times, it may not be possible to make contact. As with all of our tours, we have people in Gap Adventures head office and in our local office in Quito, Ecuador, with 24 hour cell phones for emergency situations should you need to make contact.
